4 Ways to Tell if Critters Are in Your Chimney

If you have a chimney and fireplace, critters can treat that vertical passageway like a luxury condo with a skylight. Birds, squirrels, raccoons, and even rodents love chimneys because they feel sheltered, warm, and safe from predators. At Anarumo Inspection Services, we help homeowners spot the signs early so a small animal issue does not turn into a bigger safety or repair problem. Here are four ways to tell if critters are in your chimney and what you can do next.

1. Listen for Sounds at the Right Times

Critter noise is often most noticeable early in the morning or around dusk. You might hear scratching, scurrying, chirping, rustling, or wing flapping. If the sounds seem to come from behind the firebox, above the damper, or inside the walls near the chimney chase, it is worth investigating. A chimney should not sound like it has roommates.

2. Watch for Odor & Airflow Changes

If your fireplace suddenly smells musty, sour, or like animal urine, do not ignore it. Nesting materials and droppings can create strong odors that seep into the living space, especially when the house is closed up. You might also notice the fireplace not drafting properly or emitting a smoky smell back into the room. A blocked flue from a nest can reduce airflow and create a serious fire and carbon monoxide risk.

3. Check for Visual Clues Outside

Take a look at the top of the chimney from the ground. If you see twigs, leaves, clumps of debris, feathers, or repeated bird activity around the chimney cap, nesting is possible. Missing or damaged chimney caps are a common reason animals get in. You may also see paw prints on the roof near the chimney or droppings on the ground nearby.

4. Look for Mess Inside the Firebox

Without sticking your hands into anything, use a flashlight to look into the firebox area. Signs can include bits of nesting material, droppings, fur, feathers, or an unusual pile of debris. If you see any of this, skip the DIY cleaning. Disturbing nests can expose you to bacteria and parasites, and local rules protect some wildlife.
